SPEAKER: Marcia Markland, senior editor of Thomas Dunne books, an imprint of St. Martin's Press

Whether you're an aspiring writer or a seasoned novelist, the myriad shifts in today's publishing world have likely left you with questions about what's next for the industry -- and for authors as well. How have new avenues for electronic media changed the goals and roles of the major publishing houses? Have the publishers felt any ripple effect from the Borders bankruptcy? What are editors looking for from first-time authors? Or are they looking for first-time authors at all? Are agents still a necessary step in the process? And what are the prospects for mid-list authors striving to break through to the next level?

Marcia Markland has spent her entire adult life working in book publishing and has loved (almost) every minute. She worked for St. Martin's Press early in her career and for the last dozen or so years too. She's worked at the Mystery Guild, London Weekend Television in England, and as publisher of a library fiction house. She loves fine crime and suspense novels, and lately she's been finding them all around the world. She just bought the latest novel by Iceland's famed crime writer Arnaldur Indridason and is the U.S. editor of Sweden's bestselling author John Ajvide Lindqvist (Let The Right One In). Her list of mystery writers ranges from Elizabeth Hand (Available Dark) and Iceland's Ysra Sigurdardottir (Ashes to Dust) to Agatha Award-winning writer -- and Chessie Chapter and MWA Mid-Altantic member -- G.M. Malliet. Marcia also reads about animals, science, psychology, social issues, women's issues, memoirs and current events. The Vertical Farm by Dickson Despommier is a recent favorite. Her most recent foray into memoirs is former NBC Tel Aviv Bureau Chief Martin Fletcher's autobiography, Breaking News. She also worked on Martin Fletcher's first novel, The List, which was selected as the winner of One Book, One Jewish Community.
